Mrs. J: Independence
Regained
Mrs. J, 70, came to Kindred Hospital San Antonio after
hospitalization in a short-term acute care hospital for a brain aneurysm that ruptured. She had undergone
a craniotomy and surgical repair of the ruptured aneurysm, but was left with
complications from vent weaning efforts, causing her to be placed on a trach
and PEG for her nutrition.
On April 8, Mrs. J was transferred to Kindred Hospital
San Antonio for continued care.
Prior to this hospitalization for her aneurysm, Mrs. J
had lived happily and independently at home with her spouse. She was self
sufficient with home chores, self-care, and functional mobility and had no
issues with communication or swallowing.
When Mrs. J arrived at Kindred, her independence was
nearly gone. Kindred’s rehabilitation team of physical, occupational and speech
therapists laid out a specialized treatment plan to regain Mrs. J’s
independence. The day after she was admitted the rehab team began her regimen
of daily therapy five days per week.
By the time of her discharge, the previously dependent
Mrs. J was able to get in and out of bed with minimal assistance. She was
walking with a walker for 300 feet with only contact guard assistance and
required only moderate assistance for her self-care.
When Mrs. J was discharged to a rehabilitation facility
April 23, she left Kindred fully decannulated, communicating and eating a
regular diet.
Kindred Hospital San Antonio’s success is
