    Gary

Gary, 39, was admitted to a short-term acute care hospital March 16, 2011 after being hit by a car. He sustained multiple fractures, multiple internal injuries as well as a head and spinal cord injury. His hospital course was complicated by multiple surgeries he required to repair his injuries and the need for mechanical ventilation.

On April 4, he was transferred to Kindred Hospital San Antonio for continued care. The Kindred rehabilitation team of physical, occupational and speech therapists laid out a specialized treatment plan to regain his independence.

Upon evaluation, he was found to be dependent for the performance of functional tasks and was unable to speak or eat. He did not even know his wife and children.

The rehabilitation team began a regimen of therapy five days a week with progression of physical and occupational therapy to twice a day sessions and physical therapy on Saturday as well. He continued speech therapy daily.

By the time he was discharged to home on July 15, Gary required minimal to no assistance with self care and was walking with a walker. He was eating regular food and his memory and talking skills were back to normal.

Thanks to Kindred’s rehabilitation team Gary can continue working toward his goal of returning to school to become a mechanical engineer!

Kindred Hospital San Antonio’s success is apparent in stories like this as well as in our quality scores – our patients and families rate our quality of care at 94 percent.
